It comes as no surprise that many of us feel a degree of aversion to venomous creatures, such as the snakes, scorpions and spiders. This aversion however, does not seem to extend to the automotive industry, as some very popular cars have what one would think would be very unpopular namesakes.
Carroll Shelby credited a prophetic dream for giving him the infamous Cobra name- though some have considered that story to be snake oil, at best.
Tom Gale has stated that the Dodge Viper’s name was the result of a conversation with Giorgetto Giugiaro, who suggested ‘Vipera’ as a suitable snake-inspired name. In the end, Chrysler loved it, anglicized it, and ran with it.
Carlo Abarth chose the scorpion for the Abarth emblem. Apparently, he was not inspired by its presence within the animal kingdom, but because his astrological sign was Scorpio. Fortunately for the automotive world, he was not born a Cancer, because frankly, seeing a crab on the emblem would not have had the same, desired effect.
